Zeldin Votes No On Democrats' Resolution Condemning Bigotry, Wanting It To Name Names

U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin. PRESS FILE
Mar 12, 2019 4:19 PM

The U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of a Democratic resolution on March 7 condemning anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim discrimination and bigotry against minorities. U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin, who had introduced a similar, but less broad, Republican measure weeks ago that also rejected anti-Israel and anti-Semitic hatred, voted against the resolution.

The resolution that was approved last Thursday, introduced by House Democrats, passed the House by a wide margin, 407-23. Mr. Zeldin was one of the 23 who voted against it.

He spoke on the House floor before the vote and said the resolution should name names, as his does, and called out U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar for her comments about Israel, which he considered to be anti-Semitic.

“Now, we can’t come here and just emphatically, solely, forcefully condemn anti-Semitism and name names—but if it was a Republican, we would,” Mr. Zeldin said on the floor. “It’s time to call out these statements for what they are: pointed, bigoted, unreasonable, illegitimate, anti-Semitic.”

In a press release later that day, he called the resolution “spineless” and “watered down.”

He and Ms. Omar have recently traded insults on Twitter after they were both appointed as members of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations in January. He has since called for her removal from the committee.

Calls for this legislation came after weeks of the House Democratic Party quarreling over allegations of anti-Semitism among party officials, an aftermath of Ms. Omar’s recent comments suggesting that pro-Israel American advocates have dual loyalty.

Her comments exposed a rift within the party, one side that has shown unwavering support of the U.S.-Israel relationship and the other that has expressed skepticism of the relationship, with officials that came to the congresswoman’s defense. It also led to increased Islamophobia targeted at Ms. Omar, a Muslim Democrat from Minnesota, by members of the public.

In Mr. Zeldin’s legislation, introduced on January 23, he named nine people who he said have expressed some form of anti-Israel or anti-Semitic hatred in the past, with Ms. Omar among them. He referenced her 2012 tweet, in which she said, “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doing of Israel.”

There has been no action on his resolution.

Ms. Omar has apologized for that tweet since entering office this year. It was one of several apologies she made in the last several months for comments questioning the Israeli government’s influence on U.S. politics.

The text of the House Democrats’ legislation was not finalized until hours before it went to a vote. It rejects “hateful expressions of intolerance that are contradictory to the values and aspirations of the United States” toward Jews, Muslims and all minorities.

It did not name Ms. Omar or any of the others mentioned in Mr. Zeldin’s text, but it did condemn Ms. Omar’s accusations of dual loyalty—“imputations of dual loyalty threaten American democracy and have no place in American political discourse”—and later notes such accusations’ “insidious and pernicious history.”

Obama wasn't the "deporter in-chief" - but a nice label given to him by immigration advocates to highlight his immigration failures, none the less.

"Deportations” were higher than any other president, but the total number of people who were actually sent home was lower than any other president. However, there were far fewer returns - meaning - "voluntarily” returning home under the threat of full-blown deportation was a record low - hence - less people were actually "deported" ...more

By bigfresh (4150), north sea on Mar 12, 19 9:28 AM
This is in simple terms, Socialism is an economic system where the ways of making a living (factories, offices, etc.) are owned by a society as a whole, meaning the value made belongs to everyone in that society, instead of a group of private owners. People who agree with this type of system are called socialists.

Now you can discuss it.
By Fred s (2177), Southampton on Mar 12, 19 9:47 AM
Thanks for the civil response, the new radicals in the Democrat Party , such as Omar and AOC , along with Bernie Sanders have come out in favor of a more socialist system in our still great nation, they are virulently anti capitalism and anti big business and want the government to have more power by giving away more taxpayers money seemingly in order to grow the dependent class. I am in favor of a smaller , less intrusive government with less regulation on business.

Some of the views you're attributing to politicians you disagree with are also a matter of opinion, but stated as facts.

In the same vain, tariffs are socialist too. Government favoring one business over another. Just to add,” all one needs to do is watch either cnn or msnbc” doesn’t further your argument. By telling someone to watch tv isn’t exactly cutting edge style to win an argument.
By Fred s (2177), Southampton on Mar 12, 19 3:34 PM
Taxes collected from individuals and business are funds EARNED in our capitalist system, so no I do not feel taxes are socialism. Welfare is receiving something for nothing, tax breaks for a business mean that the government is confiscating less of the profits from said business.
By bigfresh (4150), north sea on Mar 12, 19 3:42 PM
Socialism is government favoring one business over another .so in your explanation you call it socialism lite, it’s still socialism to give tax breaks to business, it favors one over another.
By Fred s (2177), Southampton on Mar 12, 19 3:49 PM
I understand you believe tax breaks for businesses aren't welfare because welfare is receiving something for nothing.

I would disagree with that definition: welfare is a government benefit granted to those who meet legal qualifications.

That's not to say they don't deserve it. That's just to say they are accepting a handout from the government in the form of lesser taxes than they are required to pay.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (5875), HAMPTON BAYS on Mar 12, 19 4:32 PM

My taxes would definitely go up if UBI was passed and I wouldn't get in on the action with Yang's plan (because it would only benefit people who make less than$12K/year) but I'd still support it (with reasonable limitations).

It's incomprehensible to me how someone would vote to raise their taxes! One can donate to the charity of their choice if they feel a need to financially support a cause, but to give MORE than we do to the government with the hope the funds will go where we feel they're needed is a fool's errand.
By bigfresh (4150), north sea on Mar 16, 19 8:31 AM
I do support charitable organizations but I also don't think they're capable of addressing all kinds of problems. When I vote to raise my own taxes it's because I think we (the fortunate) should all contribute to solving those problems, but let's caricature your view a little bit:

What if people only voted to decrease their taxes? Would we wind up with 0% tax for everyone? How would we pay for anything?

How much road do you think we can pave with charity?

Its practitioners are the tolerant or intolerant ones, and just like with any religion both exist.

NYU to host far-left political activist Linda Sarsour next week. She has close ties to anti-Semitic Calypso Louis Farrakhan.

Sarsour is an advocate for the Fake Palestinian people who are all Arabs from the surrounding Arab Nations. They were placed there to be a thorn in the side of Israel.

Israel is Sovereign Country and Jerusalem is its Eternal Capital. It is mentioned over 800+ times in the Bible - ZERO times in the Quran. Someone ought to give Sarsour a Bible.

Was the $5.7 million requested in the recent budget negotiations for the "Trump wall" or "a wall?"

Your silence is deafening.

The new construction proposed? Obviously the Trump wall.

The wall-system referenced in the survey? Unclear and open to interpretation.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (5875), HAMPTON BAYS on Mar 20, 19 10:34 AM
"Open to interpretation"....LOL...More like "open to reasonable deducing."

89 percent of line agents said "a wall system in strategic locations is necessary to securing the border.” With the border NOT secure...the clear interpretation is the status quo is lacking what is necessary. Hence...the $5.7 billion new construction proposal. Obviously the Trump wall.

By Po Boy (3726), Water Mill on Mar 20, 19 10:58 AM
No, that's YOUR interpretation. It may very well also be the interpretation of some, all, or none of the agents surveyed.

Maybe the survey question should've been better formulated if its purpose was to convey opinions about Trump's wall.
