Police: Northampton Woman Arrested For Leaving Child Home Alone

Oct 2, 2019 10:07 AM

A Northampton woman faces a misdemeanor charge after a 7-year-old child who she left home alone on Saturday night started two fires, police said.

Nora Soto-Cordova, 32, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, for leaving the child at home alone. She is not a relative of the 7-year-old, according to police.

At approximately 10:45 p.m. that night, Southampton Town Police responded to a house fire in Northampton, police said, and after an investigation, it was found that two fires were started in the home by a 7-year-old. A man, who police did not identify, told officers the child started fires in his bedroom and the kitchen, and by the time the Riverhead Fire Department arrived, both fires had been extinguished.

Along with Southampton Town detectives, Southampton Town fire marshals conducted an investigation into the fires and it was revealed that the 7-year-old was left alone at the house, police said. Police added that Child Protective Services have been notified.
