State Police: Man Accused In August Murder On Shinnecock Territory Extradited to Long Island

Dec 11, 2019 1:04 PM

Michael Gaines, 42, accused of murdering a Shinnecock Indian Reservation resident, arrived on Long Island this week, extradited from the Pitt County Detention Center in Greenville, North Carolina.

He had been there since two days after the August 16 killing of Mtundo Vanterpool, 43. Mr. Gaines was jailed in North Carolina following an arrest for breaking into a motor vehicle there, authorities said.

Mr. Gaines is now being held at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverside, and on Thursday, December 5, he was scheduled to be processed at the State Police barracks in Riverside for charges of second-degree murder and first-degree burglary.

Mr. Gaines was located in August after the alleged car break-in in North Carolina. He was held without bond on a New York State parole violation fugitive warrant, wanted in connection with the shooting death of Mr. Vanterpool, who resided on the Shinnecock territory but was not a member of the Shinnecock Nation.

On the morning of Friday, August 16, at approximately 5:35 a.m., State Police were called to the Shinnecock territory, alerted to a shooting. Mr. Vanterpool was pronounced dead of an apparent gunshot wound.

Mr. Gaines, too, was living on the territory at the time of the incident, though he was not a member of the tribe.
