ORIGINAL STORY:

Emergency crews responded to a car fire on Sunrise Highway near the Flanders Road exit on Wednesday, which caused police to close the highway to westbound traffic.

Emergency radio communications reported the car fire at approximately 12:10 p.m. The flaming vehicle was located one half mile west of exit 65 — where Flanders Road crosses Sunrise Highway — and the flames had spread to the ground and area brush.

Firefighters from Hampton Bays and East Quogue were heard on the radio responding to the scene.

Traffic heading west was diverted off of Sunrise Highway at Exit 65.

State Police did not respond to requests seeking additional information.

No other details were immediately available.
